Norwood Business Tax Registration ( FoodBusiness License)
All businesses including home, online or mobile BUSINESS need a BUSINESS license because they are BUSINESSES.

A(n) Food business using a fictitious business name in Nelson County i.e. you are a business with a trade name other than the owner's legal (full name) name are required to get a(n) fictitious business name.   For instance you open a(n) Food business and you name it "Superior Food Group". You will need to file a fictitious business name for that name.

Also, keep in mind that in VA Food though, a business license and a DBA is necessary for most businesses but if your business sells any taxable items, you will need a sales tax ID number.  (A.K.A state id, wholesale, resale, reseller certificate, about $39 for most states). You will need it if you sell or want to buy wholesale any Food related items, such as food, materials, or merchandise.
Seller's Permit

Note: All businesses need a federal tax ID number except sole proprietors that are not employers and are not independent contractors.
An independent contractor is a self employed business person that receives more than $600 per year from anyone of his or her clients.
IRS rule: The client must issue a 1099 form to the independent contractor and the independent contractor must have a federal tax ID. However, even sole owners may obtain a federal ID and use it as a business tax ID instead of using their own social security number as a business tax ID number.
However, all other licenses that apply to sole proprietors as discussed here are requited regardless of getting a federal tax ID number.

If you are thinking of hiring help, you will need a state employer ID and an IRS number employer ID. I.e., a VA Federal Tax Id Number ($29) and a(n) VA  State Employer Tax Number

Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing (about $49 plus state and legal newspaper publication fees) in Norwood, Incorporate in VA  or  form a(n) VA LLC
.

You have a choice to file a DBA or form an LLC or incorporate. Businesses that use the full legal name of the owner as a business name do not need to register an assumed business name. So, for example, your name is "John X Doe" and you use that as a business name.

If you do form an Retail Online llc or incorporate (about $49 plus state fees for most states) your Food business instead of just filing a fictitious business name (dba), that insurs that you don't have personal liability for debts and civile liabililty arising from your business dealings and you will not have to record the Norwood business name. Instead of filing a Nelson County fictitious business name (our service fee includes dba business name filing and legal paper publication) you can elect to incorporate in VA or form an VA LLC (starts @ $49 plus state fee for most states & includes required documents such as bylaws for the corporation and Limited Liability operating agreement for the LLC). .

Answer: Hi Sam, here are the Licenses You Need for Starting A Food Business In NC.

First, you need LLC, DBA, or Corporation, so you can register your business name "Soss Sauce,".

Second, You will need to buy your Food items from wholesale and sell them retail (i.e., collecting sales tax). In both cases, you will need to obtain a seller's permit to do it legally. The North Carolina (NC) state sales tax rate is currently 4.75%.

Third, you need a business license and or a home occupation permit. If you are a home business, you may need just one or both of these.

Finally, If you hire Food workers, you will need both a Federal EIN, and a State EIN as well.

Wholesale License 29902: what wholesale license does a food business need in Beaufort, SC?

Wholesale food in South Carolina begins with the Retail License, which is what suppliers want to see along with the Form ST-8A Resale Certificate. Food businesses also need approvals for storage, delivery or preparation, depending on what you do. With eight employees, you need an EIN and state employer registration, and LLC Food may need a DBA.

Short answer: Wholesale License 29902: the key filing in South Carolina is the Retail License. Suppliers will ask for its number and a Form ST-8A Resale Certificate before they sell to you tax-free.

Buying and selling wholesale in South Carolina

South Carolina calls its seller's permit the Retail License. To buy for resale without paying sales tax, you give the supplier a Form ST-8A Resale Certificate. A retail license is required for retail sellers; a business making only wholesale sales may not need one. South Carolina also accepts the multistate uniform certificate in place of its ST-8A form if it contains the same information.

What a food business needs in Beaufort, SC

  1. LLC – limits personal liability, and an LLC under its exact name needs no extra DBA
  2. Trade name (DBA) – South Carolina has no general statewide DBA filing; some cities or counties keep their own trade name records, and an LLC under its exact name needs none
  3. Federal tax ID number (EIN) – wholesale suppliers and banks ask for it on credit and account applications
  4. Retail License – collect and report sales tax on retail sales
  5. Form ST-8A Resale Certificate – keep a copy on file for every supplier you buy from tax-free
  6. State employer ID – for state income tax withholding and unemployment insurance
  7. Beaufort business license – the city or county tracks who does business there and checks safety rules
  8. Food service license

Same permit, different names in other states

  • Arizona: the Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) license. Arizona's TPT is a tax on the seller's privilege of doing business, not a tax on the buyer.
  • North Carolina: the Certificate of Registration (sales and use tax). North Carolina lets registered wholesale-only merchants opt out of filing sales and use tax returns.
  • Oregon: No statewide sales tax, so no seller's permit; out-of-state suppliers may still ask for documentation such as a multistate exemption certificate.
