Hi, I'm Jackie Ley What Licenses Do I Need In NC Sewing I am a sewing company. I will buy wholesale parts and Sell to companies in NC from my home. A: In NC, you will need these licenses: a business license, a Seller's license, and a DBA, LLC, or corporation jackie...., Jackie Ley.
Sewing

You can choose to be a(n) Sewing :

  • Sole Proprietor,
  • LLC,
  • Corporation or
  • Partnership.
After you decide and select your business entity, you need licensing.

Prattville Business Tax Registration ( SewingBusiness License)
All businesses including home, online or mobile BUSINESS need a BUSINESS license because they are BUSINESSES.

A(n) Sewing business using a fictitious business name in Autauga County i.e. you are a business that uses a DBA doing business as trade name to trade that is other than the full legal (first and last -- full name) name of a sole proprietor or a name other than the LLC or Corporation business name need a(n) fictitious business name.   For instance you open a(n) Sewing business and you name it "Superior Sewing Group". You will need to file a fictitious business name for that name.

In AL Sewing you need a resale ID ( AKA seller's permit) if you selling touchable items.  (A.K.A state id, wholesale, resale, reseller certificate, about $39 for most states). You will need it if you sell or want to buy wholesale any Sewing related items, such as food, materials, or merchandise.
Seller's Permit

Note: All businesses need a federal tax ID number except sole proprietors that are not employers and are not independent contractors.
An independent contractor is a self employed business person that receives more than $600 per year from anyone of his or her clients.
IRS rule: The client must issue a 1099 form to the independent contractor and the independent contractor must have a federal tax ID. However, even sole owners may obtain a federal ID and use it as a business tax ID instead of using their own social security number as a business tax ID number.
However, all other licenses that apply to sole proprietors as discussed here are requited regardless of getting a federal tax ID number.

In addition you will need a federal and a state EIN if you will hire employees. I.e., a AL Federal Tax Id Number ($29) and a(n) AL  State Employer Tax Number

Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing (about $49 plus state and legal newspaper publication fees) in Prattville, Incorporate in AL  or  form a(n) AL LLC
.

Filing a DBA is not required if you will set up an LLC or form a Corporation. If you will do business under your first and last legal name you will not need to get a fictitious business name.
Also note that even using your first and last name may not help you avoid filing a DBA if the name has a suffix such as "& sons" etc.

If you do form an Retail Trade llc or incorporate (about $49 plus state fees for most states) your Sewing business instead of just filing a fictitious business name (dba), that insurs that you don't have personal liability for debts and civile liabililty arising from your business dealings and you will not have to record the Prattville business name. In lieu of recording a Autauga County trade company name (our filing service fee includes trade name registration and newspaper legal publication for 4 weeks) you can also form a corporation in AL or form an AL LLC (starts @ $49 plus state fee for most states & includes bylaws for the corporation and Limited Liability operating agreement for the LLC that is required to open a business bank account). .
Sewing
Whether a Sewing online, home, store, concession stand or a mobile cart, you will need to first select among sole owner/proprietor, partnership, LLC or corporation, all of which also require a General Business License (not a specific license to your type of business) as well. If your trade name is a business name other than your full personal legal name, you will need to file a DBA . For instance, your name is John Doe, and you do business as Best Sewing By John, the name must be registered with a DBA Biz Name because it is not your full legal name. Also, note that whatever item that you sell or lease and it is an item that can be touched (i.e., tangible such as equipment, toys, merchandise, electronics, prepared food) requires a state sales tax ID ( Sellers Permit ) to either buy or sell the items or products wholesale and or sell them retail. If you are hiring Sewing workers anytime soon, you will need a Federal EIN and a State EIN (employer identification number). Other instances that you will need a federal tax ID are: if you are a partnership, an independent contractor, and a corporation or an LLC . You can also obtain a federal tax ID as a sole proprietor and use it as a business tax ID in the place of a social security number. However, you will still need other Sewing registrations, such as licenses, an assumed business name DBA, and tax IDs as described above. Finally, even one person, Sewing sole owner/proprietors working from home or just online can form a LLC or incorporate, in which case, they will not need to file a DBA.

What Licenses Do I Need To Buy Wholesale Sewing
Sewing and quilting business licenses and wholesale permit in Auburn, AL🪡AL · WHOLESALE

Auburn, AL

What licenses do I need to buy wholesale? (A sewing and quilting business in Auburn, AL)

The owner shared: “I am a sewer, quilter and craft maker. I have been asked to make items for others.”

When people ask you to make items, you are in business, and in Auburn that means Alabama's sales tax license for items sold. Buying fabric wholesale tax-free needs the resale certificate showing your Alabama sales tax account number, and only fabric that becomes part of items you sell qualifies. Needles and thread you use up are taxed. Ask us about an LLC and EIN to keep custom work separate from you personally.

Short answer: For a sewing and quilting business in Auburn, Alabama, the essentials are the sales tax license, a federal tax ID number (EIN) and a local business license, plus an LLC or other structure.

Buying and selling wholesale in Alabama

The Alabama version of the seller's permit is the sales tax license. When you buy inventory to resell, the paperwork is an Alabama resale certificate. Wholesalers making no retail sales may get a state sales tax certificate of exemption (Form STE-1) instead of a sales tax license. Many Alabama cities and counties levy their own sales taxes, some administered locally, so local registration can be needed too.

What a sewing and quilting business needs in Auburn, AL

  1. LLC – keeps your house and savings separate from the business's debts and contracts
  2. Trade Name (assumed name) – registers the trade name on your sign, website and invoices
  3. Federal tax ID number (EIN) – required for an LLC with partners or any business with employees
  4. Sales tax license – the number wholesale suppliers want before they sell to you tax-free
  5. Alabama resale certificate – hand it to suppliers to buy inventory for resale without sales tax
  6. State employer ID – for state income tax withholding and unemployment insurance
  7. Auburn business license – the city or county tracks who does business there and checks safety rules

If you sell across state lines

  • Arizona: the Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) license. Arizona's TPT is a tax on the seller's privilege of doing business, not a tax on the buyer.
  • North Carolina: the Certificate of Registration (sales and use tax). North Carolina lets registered wholesale-only merchants opt out of filing sales and use tax returns.
  • Oregon: No statewide sales tax, so no seller's permit; out-of-state suppliers may still ask for documentation such as a multistate exemption certificate.

Industry code: NAICS 459130 (Sewing, Needlework, and Piece Goods Retailers), 451130 under the 2017 codes
