After you decide and select your business entity, you need licensing.

Boise Business Tax Registration ( PetsBusiness License)
All businesses including home, online or mobile BUSINESS need a BUSINESS license because they are BUSINESSES.

A(n) Pets business using a DBA Doing Business As Trade Name in Ada County , i.e., starting businesses using a company name other than the legal (given name) owner's name, need a(n) DBA Doing Business As Trade Name Registration.   For example, you start a(n) Pets business and you call it "Ultra Pets Co". You will need to file a trade firm name for it.

Also, keep in mind that in ID Pets though, a business license and a DBA is necessary for most businesses but if your business sells any taxable items, you will need a sales tax ID number.  (A.K.A state id, wholesale, resale, reseller certificate, about $39 for most states). You will need it if you sell or want to buy wholesale any Pets related items, such as food, materials, or merchandise.
Seller's Permit

Note: All businesses need a federal tax ID number except sole proprietors that are not employers and are not independent contractors.
An independent contractor is a self employed business person that receives more than $600 per year from anyone of his or her clients.
IRS rule: The client must issue a 1099 form to the independent contractor and the independent contractor must have a federal tax ID. However, even sole owners may obtain a federal ID and use it as a business tax ID instead of using their own social security number as a business tax ID number.
However, all other licenses that apply to sole proprietors as discussed here are requited regardless of getting a federal tax ID number.

If you are thinking of hiring help, you will need a state employer ID and an IRS number employer ID. I.e., a ID Federal Tax Id Number ($29) and a(n) ID  State Employer Tax Number

Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing (about $49 plus state and legal newspaper publication fees) in Boise, Incorporate in ID  or  form a(n) ID LLC
.

If you will set up a corporation or form an LLC, you will not have to file a DBA (Doing Business As) unless your corproration or LLC name will be different that the busienss name you will trade under. Businesses that use the full legal name of the owner as a business name do not need to register an assumed business name. So, for example, your name is "John X Doe" and you use that as a business name.

If you do form an Retail Trade llc or incorporate (about $49 plus state fees for most states) your Pets business instead of just filing a fictitious business name (dba), it will help you avoid legal and financial personal liability arising out of business transactions and you will not have to register the Boise business name. Instead of filing a Ada County fictitious business name (our service fee includes dba business name filing and legal paper publication) you can elect to incorporate in ID or form an ID LLC (starts @ $49 plus state fee for most states & includes bylaws and LLC operating agreement)..

Obtain Tax ID Boise Sole Owner Store: what wholesale license does a pet supply store need in Boise, ID?

Bags of kibble stacked by the door, squeaky toys piled in a bin and a wagging tail at the leash aisle.

Short answer: Obtain Tax ID Boise Sole Owner Store: the key filing in Idaho is the seller's permit. Suppliers will ask for its number and a Form ST-101 Sales Tax Resale or Exemption Certificate before they sell to you tax-free.

Buying and selling wholesale in Idaho

The Idaho version of the seller's permit is the seller's permit. To buy for resale without paying sales tax, you give the supplier a Form ST-101 Sales Tax Resale or Exemption Certificate. Suppliers generally accept a resale certificate only from a buyer registered for sales tax, so even a business that mostly buys and sells wholesale usually registers. Idaho's single ST-101 form handles both resale and other exemption claims. Buying pet supplies from suppliers without paying sales tax works through a resale certificate, because the items will be resold; fixtures and supplies you keep for yourself are still taxed.

Your Boise filing checklist

  1. LLC – suppliers and banks take an LLC more seriously than a name on a napkin
  2. Assumed Business Name (DBA) – registers the trade name on your sign, website and invoices
  3. Federal tax ID number (EIN) – keeps your Social Security number off W-9 forms and supplier paperwork
  4. Seller's permit – required before the first taxable sale, including online, flea market and craft fair sales
  5. Form ST-101 Sales Tax Resale or Exemption Certificate – keep a copy on file for every supplier you buy from tax-free
  6. Boise business license – needed even for home-based businesses, which may also need a home occupation permit
  7. Pet shop or animal sales permit if selling live animals

How other states name the wholesale permit

  • Arizona: the Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) license. Arizona's TPT is a tax on the seller's privilege of doing business, not a tax on the buyer.
  • Delaware: No statewide sales tax; instead Delaware imposes a gross receipts tax on sellers, with wholesalers classified separately from retailers.
  • New Mexico: the Gross Receipts Tax registration (CRS ID). New Mexico uses NTTCs instead of resale certificates, sorted by type, and buyers obtain them online after registering.

Tip: Keep treats at the register; owners buy them on impulse, and a whining dog is excellent marketing.

Industry code: NAICS 459910 (Pet and Pet Supplies Retailers), 453910 under the 2017 edition
