You can choose to be a(n) HAIR :

  • Sole Proprietor,
  • LLC,
  • Corporation or
  • Partnership.
After you decide and select your business entity, you need licensing.

Bayonne Business Tax Registration ( HAIRBusiness License)
All businesses including home, online or mobile BUSINESS need a BUSINESS license because they are BUSINESSES.

A(n) HAIR business using a DBA Doing Business As Trade Name in Hudson County , i.e., starting businesses using a company name other than the legal (given name) owner's name, need a(n) DBA Doing Business As Trade Name Registration.   For example, you start a(n) HAIR business and you call it "Ultra HAIR Co". You will need to file a trade firm name for it.

Also, keep in mind that in NJ HAIR though, a business license and a DBA is necessary for most businesses but if your business sells any taxable items, you will need a sales tax ID number.  (A.K.A state id, wholesale, resale, reseller certificate, about $39 for most states). You will need it if you sell or want to buy wholesale any HAIR related items, such as food, materials, or merchandise.
Seller's Permit

Note: All businesses need a federal tax ID number except sole proprietors that are not employers and are not independent contractors.
An independent contractor is a self employed business person that receives more than $600 per year from anyone of his or her clients.
IRS rule: The client must issue a 1099 form to the independent contractor and the independent contractor must have a federal tax ID. However, even sole owners may obtain a federal ID and use it as a business tax ID instead of using their own social security number as a business tax ID number.
However, all other licenses that apply to sole proprietors as discussed here are requited regardless of getting a federal tax ID number.

If you are thinking of hiring help, you will need a state employer ID and an IRS number employer ID. I.e., a NJ Federal Tax Id Number ($29) and a(n) NJ  State Employer Tax Number

Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing (about $49 plus state and legal newspaper publication fees) in Bayonne, Incorporate in NJ  or  form a(n) NJ LLC

If you will set up a corporation or form an LLC, you will not have to file a DBA (Doing Business As) unless your corproration or LLC name will be different that the busienss name you will trade under. Businesses that use the full legal name of the owner as a business name do not need to register an assumed business name. So, for example, your name is "John X Doe" and you use that as a business name.

If you do form an Retail Online llc or incorporate (about $49 plus state fees for most states) your HAIR business instead of just filing a fictitious business name (dba), it will help you avoid legal and financial personal liability arising out of business transactions and you will not have to register the Bayonne business name. Instead of filing a Hudson County fictitious business name (our service fee includes dba business name filing and legal paper publication) you can elect to incorporate in NJ or form an NJ LLC (starts @ $49 plus state fee for most states & includes bylaws and LLC operating agreement)..

You’re stepping into the hair game with some serious style—retail hair products and an in-home salon? Talk about slayin’ two wigs with one comb! Let’s get your business legit so you can make money and sleep at night without worrying about surprise visits. Here’s the lowdown on what you need:

✅ Licenses and Registrations You’ll Need

  • ✅ **LLC (Limited Liability Company)** – This gives your business its own legal identity. It protects your personal assets if someone tries to come after your business. It also makes you sound *very* official at brunch.
  • ✅ **Seller's Permit** – Since you’re selling products (hair extensions, beauty goodies), you’ll need this to collect sales tax from customers. No permit = trouble with the tax powers that be. And no one wants that energy.
  • ✅ **Business License** – A general license that gives you the official “go-ahead” to operate legally in your area. Consider it your “permission slip” to boss up.
  • ✅ **Cosmetology License** (or Hair Braiding License) – If you're touching heads for money—even braiding—you may need this. Yes, even in your living room salon. This is one of those “better safe than sorry” moves.
  • ✅ **Home Occupation Permit** – Since your salon is inside your home, this gives your home the green light to double as a hair HQ. No sketchy vibes, just silky strands and clean paperwork.
  • ✅ **EIN (Employer Identification Number)** – Even if you’re solo right now, you’ll need this number for things like opening a business bank account or filing taxes. Think of it as your business’s social security number... minus the drama.
  • ✅ **Fictitious Business Name Registration** – If you're not using your own name (like “Tasha’s Tresses” instead of “Natasha Green”), you’ll want to register that name officially.
  • ✅ What About an LLC or S Corp?

Both are great, but most small business ballers start with an LLC. It’s simpler to maintain, protects your assets, and makes you look legit. An S Corp is more advanced and may help save money on taxes down the road—but comes with more paperwork than a DMV line. Example? Say a customer slips on a wig left on the floor and breaks an ankle. If you’re an LLC, they can’t come for your couch, car, or cat—just your biz. Big win.

    ✅ Capital to Start

Starting small? You can launch your in-home salon and online store with as little as $2,500–$5,000. Here’s where the money typically goes:
  • ✅ Equipment & Tools (salon chair, dryer, hair care tools): $1,000–$2,000
  • ✅ Initial Inventory (hair bundles, edge control, lashes, etc.): $500–$1,500
  • ✅ Marketing & Branding (logo, website, business cards): $300–$1,000
  • ✅ Licenses & Legal Setup: $300–$700
  • ✅ Equipment You’ll Need

  • ✅ Styling chair (spin those clients like a DJ)
  • ✅ Shampoo bowl or portable sink
  • ✅ Hooded dryer or blow dryer
  • ✅ Flat iron, curling iron, and clippers (tools of transformation)
  • ✅ Ring light for that flawless Instagram content
  • ✅ Shelving for retail products (gotta make it pretty!)
  • ✅ Industry Vibes: Beauty by the Numbers

  • ✅ The U.S. hair extension market is expected to reach $3.4 billion by 2028. That’s a *lot* of bundles being shipped.
  • ✅ 88% of beauty shoppers buy online. Your website isn’t optional—it's essential.
  • ✅ The average profit margin for beauty products? Between 60%–80%. Yeah... your bundles are basically gold.
  • Obtain all licenses and registrations here online: 👉 https://www.businessnameusa.com/ Now get out there and make magic—whether it’s braiding baby hairs to perfection or shipping bundles like a boss. ✅Hi, Selling Hair I just opened my own in home hair salon.
